Undergraduate enrollment in petroleum engineering is down 75% since 2014, WSJ reported. That's despite the fact that the average petroleum engineering grad makes 40% more than a computer science grad. Heinze told the Journal of Petroleum Technology that over 90% of petroleum-engineering students at Texas Tech have jobs right after graduation. But when it came to picking which career paths were most attractive, the Gen Zers surveyed ranked finance as the most promising industry regarding career prospects. Education was ranked the second-most popular industry when it came to career prospects, and STEM, which includes engineering, was ranked fifth.

CNN —TikTok’s song of the summer, the ecstatically explicit “One Margarita,” just got a raucous new music video — with a cameo from none other than supermodel Cindy Crawford. In the music video, Crawford recreates her famous 1992 Pepsi Super Bowl ad, in which she visited a dusty vending machine at a general store to grab and gulp a cold Pepsi while young boys ogled her. With one margarita, Moore raps, she’ll “open her legs.” By the time she’s had five margaritas, well, even her partner is feeling open to experimentation. From Giant Music“One Margarita (The Margarita Song)” was originally improvised by Moore on the spot in May. Just 6 percent of all college students attend a school with an acceptance rate of 25 percent or less. 56 percent of these college students go to a school that admits at least three-quarters of its applicants. But because affirmative action only opened a tiny window of access to America’s most elite institutions, the ruling will make little difference for most college students.

Biden's plan would have eliminated her remaining student debt balance. KeyBanc's Thomas said the student loan payment pause was yet another pandemic tail wind for retailers. Estimates vary on how much student loan borrowers will pay each month. Kantrowitz said there is little data on how Americans used the money that they did not spend on student debt. He said the student loan changes are modest compared with the pinch that people feel from inflation or the dwindling of pandemic-strengthened savings accounts.

How to repel mosquitoes, according to science

Here’s the lowdown on how mosquitoes hunt us, what attracts them, and what scientists recommend for keeping them at bay. The science of mosquito bitesMost of the time, mosquitoes drink plant nectars and juices, and even help pollinate flowers. “How attractive you think you are to mosquitoes might not necessarily correlate with how attractive you actually are to the mosquitoes,” McMeniman said. The itchiness and discomfort from mosquito bites come later when the perpetrator is no longer at risk of getting swatted. No silver bullet exists to protect yourself from mosquito bites, but get a good bug spray and reapply it as needed.

New York CNN —Homeowners insurance is becoming more expensive and, in many places, more difficult to find. The companies also blame limits placed on insurance premiums in some states, including California. Insurance premiums nationwide aren’t up significantly – only 1.6% in the last 12 months according to the Consumer Price Index, the government’s main inflation measure. For instance, in Louisiana, 17% of homeowners insurance policyholders had their policies canceled last year, according to an annual report from Louisiana State University. Meanwhile, more than two-thirds of policyholders said homeowners and flood insurance are more expensive in Louisiana than other states.

As a baby cried during White House remarks, Biden joked, "I'm bored with me, too." The White House was hosting the men's and women's NCAA championship-winning teams on Friday. During a speech welcoming the men's basketball team from the University of Connecticut on Friday, which recently won the NCAA Championship, Biden drew chuckles after his self-effacing comment. While talking about a discussion he had with the university president, President Biden interrupted himself saying, "That's okay. The White House hosted the University of Connecticut Huskies men's basketball team and the NCAA-champion Louisiana State University Tigers women's team during separate events.

In her first book, “Monstrous Intimacies,” Sharpe writes extensively on Walker’s work to reveal how society is programmed to default to racist narratives. The work in Sharpe’s office, like many of Walker’s famous prints and sculptures, is devoid of color. The more time I spend with Sharpe’s work, the more it inflects my ways of seeing the world. According to Sharpe, Blackness is anagrammatical, meaning that the structures that order language, thought and society become disordered — if not destroyed entirely — when they encounter Blackness. “Her work has shown that we, as Black people, are the foils of humanity,” Frank B. Wilderson III, author of “Afropessimism,” told me.
NCAA basketball champion Angel Reese isn't fast-tracking her college career, even if she had the option to go pro. "I'm in no rush to go to the league," Reese, 20, recently told the "I Am Athlete" podcast. That's more than any other college basketball player, the report says. Reese knows exactly what she wants to spend her newly gained fortune on, too: a Mercedes-Benz, she said on the podcast. "My first year [in college], I was just taking money," Reese said.
Opinion: Texas judge’s stunning ruling caps extraordinary week
  + stars: | 2023-04-09 | by ( ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +17 min
We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. Tennessee legislators targeted three members of the state House for joining a gun control protest in the chamber, expelling two young Black men while failing to oust a 60-year-old White woman. (He gave the Biden administration a week to appeal the ruling before it goes into effect. Thus, the week that began with Trump facing a judge in Manhattan ended with a Trump-appointed judge overturning more than two decades of medical practice. “They go far too fast to be safe on the sidewalk” and aren’t right for bike lanes or roads either.
When Louisiana State University women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey strode from the court after yet another win last month, she peeled off her pink butterfly-bedazzled blazer. The move was more rock star than 60-year-old college coach, but it was in keeping with Ms. Mulkey’s razzle-dazzle. Ms. Mulkey, along with the University of South Carolina’s Dawn Staley, is leading the charge for a new wave of women’s college basketball coaches using fashion as a crucial part of their public image. Friday night, in the hotly anticipated Women’s Final Four, millions worldwide will be tuning in to watch the formidable face-offs of South Carolina vs. Iowa, and LSU vs. Virginia Tech. Many of them will also be paying close attention to what Ms. Staley and Ms. Mulkey, superstar, title-winning coaches who earn seven-figure salaries, are wearing.
Our solar system was hit by a gamma-ray burst so bright, it blinded space equipment and telescopes. A gamma-ray burst that recently hit our solar system was so bright, it temporarily blinded gamma-ray instruments in space, according to a NASA release. Scientists say the gamma-ray burst (GRB), the most powerful type of explosion in the universe, was 70 times brighter than any previously recorded event. What is a gamma-ray burst? Because it blinded space instruments, they couldn't accurately record it, so scientists weren't sure how bright the burst was when it first reached our planet.

Student athlete-slash-TikToker Olivia Dunne posted a paid partnership video about using AI for homework help. Three days after the video was published, LSU made a statement about the power of AI and warned students of academic misconduct. Dunne is the third highest valued student athlete in the US, according to NIL database. The 10-second clip garnered over one million views, and was followed by a statement from LSU on using AI for schoolwork days later, local news reported. The change sparked a slew of brand deals for college athletes, and Dunne is among the highest earners.
Four people were arrested in connection with the alleged rape of Madison Brooks, a Louisiana State University student who was fatally hit by a car shortly after the suspects dropped her off in an East Baton Rouge subdivision. Lee is Washington's uncle, the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office said. Carver told investigators that he, his friends and Lee did not know Brooks prior to meeting her at Reggie's, the report said. When they were about to leave, Brooks asked for a ride home, Carver told detectives. He told CBS affiliate WAFB of Baton Rouge that a rape did not occur.
The University of California is investing $4 billion with Blackstone to acquire rentals and student housing. The investment comes at a crucial time for Blackstone's Real Estate Income Trust Inc. fund — also known as BREIT— a $68 billion property investment vehicle. "We consider BREIT to be one of the best positioned, large-scale real estate portfolios in the US, managed by one of the world's top real estate investors," said Jagdeep Singh Bachher, the University of California's chief investment officer. The University of California's investment could become a model for other universities with large endowment funds — typically in the billions of dollars — that want to invest in real estate investment trusts or commercial real estate assets. BREIT's portfolio includes assets in popular college towns such as Fort Collins, Colorado, where Colorado State University is located, and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, which is home to Louisiana State University, according to the fund's website.

Then she came across an employee benefit her company offered: A "college coach." It is an intriguing employee benefit, in the era of the 'Great Resignation' and 'Quiet Quitting.' says Craig Copeland, director of wealth benefits research at the Employee Benefit Research Institute. Getting help from college coaches is not to discount the critical work school counselors do every day. Since we are in the thick of application season, do not waste time in finding out if you have this employee benefit, especially if your teenager is looking ahead to college next fall.
Many are upset that the Black former superstar is leaving a Historically Black University where his leadership could continue to provide a solid foundation for young Black athletes. Sanders proved his ability in his first coaching job by making the Jackson State Tigers the best team among HBCUs. In his final game at Jackson State, Sanders will lead the Tigers against North Carolina Central University in the Cricket Celebration Bowl on Dec. 17 in Atlanta. At each previous stop in Saban’s head coaching journey (University of Toledo, Michigan State University, Louisiana State University and the NFL’s Miami Dolphins), he may well have disappointed some players who signed on hoping he would stay. His son, Jackson State star quarterback Shedeur Sanders, is expected to do just that and follow his father.

It and other publications rightly called it out for mocking the LGBTQ community. Republicans are belittling knowledge that they find threatening to the status quo that gives the lives of social conservatives meaning. To play on the words of Ben Shapiro, I call this movement the “feelings over facts” orientation, and it has been positioned as a bulwark against indoctrination by disciplines that focus on race, gender and art. This is the not-so-subtle implication of the mailer supporting DeSantis. For everyone who doesn’t believe gender studies is threatening, the student in the photo the mailer used is just a new nonbinary college graduate.
Anse Marcel Beach in Saint Martin before Hurricane Irma on August 25, 2016, and the storm on September 11, 2017. Hurricane Ian is a Category 3 storm forecasted to strengthen to a Category 4 before it batters Florida this week. "Hurricanes and tropical storms throw three hazards at us: wind, rainfall, and storm surge," he wrote. This shocks people, as it would seem intuitive that a Category 5 hurricane would tend to dump more rain than a Category 1 hurricane. Here's a closer look at the type of damage that storms at different categories can cause.
